Welcome to Wear Referrals, a veterinary referral service in Bradbury in the North of England, based in our state-of-the-art veterinary referral and emergency small animal hospital.

We are conveniently located 300 yards off Junction 60 on the A1 (which is the Sedgefield turnoff) and this allows rapid and easy access for all referred clients and emergencies.

We look after animals referred to us by vets from all over the UK. We welcome all enquiries and look forward to helping you.

Neurology

Our neurology service is for patients with brain disease; spinal disease; exercise-induced weakness or collapse; loss of vision where there is no direct eye problem and unusual or unexplained lameness.  The main neurological diseases we see are disk disease, ischemic myelopathy (FCE), patients with seizures (epilepsy), inflammatory CNS disease (meningitis, encephalitis) and patients with tumours.  We are equipped to run an extensive range of diagnostic procedures and where needed patients will undergo spinal or brain surgery.

Orthopaedics

We are a RCVS Recognised Specialist-lead service accepting all canine and feline orthopaedic referrals. We have an extensive array of orthopaedic equipment within the hospital to enable us to diagnose and treat all orthopaedic cases. We have pioneered the use of several orthopaedic procedures in the U.K. including BioMedtrix canine ankle replacement, Orthomed elbow congruity adjustment (CERO) and 3-D printed patient specific cutting, reduction guides and plates for angular limb deformity correction and arthrodesis.

Oncology

The Oncology service at Wear Referrals is led by Aaron Harper, an EBVS® and RCVS Recognised Specialist in Oncology. The Oncology service works alongside our Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine and Surgery departments to deliver the best possible care to our patients. We accept cases of cancer in dogs and cats, including common conditions such as lymphomas, mast cell tumours and sarcomas. The Oncology service can also offer investigations of suspected cancers (e.g. abdominal masses).

We accept referrals in all areas of soft tissue surgery, including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. We work closely with colleagues in our internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia departments to ensure patients referred to us receive comprehensive clinical care and have a dedicated, experienced team of soft tissue nurses.  We are one of very few centres in the north of England to be able to offer this genuinely multi-disciplinary approach that we firmly believe enables us to offer the best standard of care for our patients.

Internal Medicine

The Internal Medicine team utilise a wide range of techniques and equipment to help us reach a diagnosis.  We also work closely with other services within our hospital drawing upon the joint expertise of vets specialising in different disciplines. Our dedicated intensive care unit allows the high-level care to be delivered around the clock to critically ill patients.  A dedicated team of RVNs work alongside the Specialists to afford the best possible standard of care to patients.

specialist services - cardiology

Diagnostic procedures will be carried out after a careful initial assessment. These include blood tests, thoracic radiography, electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound), including spectral and colour flow doppler. We also carry out 24-hour ECG monitoring (Holter) for the investigation of intermittent syncope and diagnosis/ monitoring of arrhythmias. Patients with clinical signs caused by airway disease may have further investigations, such as bronchoscopy or thoracic CT, carried out by the Cardiology or Internal Medicine services.

Intensive Care

We have a dedicated ICU ward for critically ill patients. The highly skilled nurse teams who look after the ICU ward have a vast array of knowledge regarding patients and clinical conditions. They are supported overnight by an experienced on-site veterinary surgeon.

Diagnostic Imaging

Advanced imaging is essential for the management of the majority of referred patients. Our imaging team work closely with all other disciplines to assist in diagnosis.  Combining experience and expertise with state-of-the-art equipment they assist in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions. The imaging service also obtain minimally invasive biopsy and tissue samples using image guidance.

Emergency & OOH Service

Wear Referrals provides an emergency Out of Hours (OOH) service which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At Wear Referrals, we have a dedicated ICU ward for critically ill patients. The OOH service will be supported by our multidiscipline referral team which runs the veterinary specialist service. This means that your pet will have the best possible care in what is arguably the best equipped and staffed veterinary facility in the North of England.

Rehabilitation

Referral and treatment at Wear Referrals is sometimes just the first step.  We can also assist with the process of recovery from disease, injury or surgery.  This includes the management of pain and restoring normal movement patterns which is done in partnership with our resident physiotherapists and hydrotherapists.  Whilst in hospital patients will receive physiotherapy, massage and hydrotherapy which can continue after they have been discharged.  Our team of experienced physiotherapists are members of the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners and their professional bodies including ACPAT and NAVP.

Our Anaesthetist service provides individually tailored anaesthetic and analgesic plans for all patients to provide optimal comfort and pain relief. This includes:
