Orthopaedics

Our Orthopaedics Team

Our orthopaedic team at Wear Referrals is led by Neil Burton, working alongside Laura Homer, both of whom are Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialists in small animal surgery. The team also includes our Surgery Resident - Emily Frapwell, a Cambridge graduate who undertook a rotating internship at Cambridge.

Our orthopaedic surgeons are supported by a team of 12 dedicated, orthopaedic service specific nurses with particular expertise and experience in surgery, rehabilitation and nursing of orthopaedic patients. Several of the orthopaedic service nursing team have additional qualifications in areas such as anaesthesia, CPR, surgical nursing, physiotherapy, behaviour, wound care/bandaging, weight management, and osteoarthritis management.

Your pet will also benefit from continuity of care as they see the same surgeon and nursing team throughout their care at Wear.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, our orthopaedics team work particularly closely with our neurology and neurosurgery specialists, often assessing patients together to come to a diagnosis as to whether lameness is either orthopaedic or neurologic in origin. This wider team support and expertise, along with our exceptional facilities means we consider the whole patient, rather than just one part of their body.

All of our patients benefit from our team of specialists in anaesthesia, overseeing pain management and procedures such as epidurals and nerve blocks where appropriate. We have 24 hour on-site care, including ICU so patients with various levels of care can stay with us as long as they need. Our patients have regular pain assessments throughout the day and night to ensure they are in no discomfort following surgery. For us this is standard of care and our constant presence of vets and nurses throughout the night supports this.

In addition to their clinical practice, our orthopaedics team carry out clinical research and have contributed to numerous studies and projects to advance veterinary orthopaedic knowledge and practice, with over 40 papers published by the team.

With their evidence-based approach, our team ensure best practice for all their patients and tailor treatment plans to each individual patient, to give the best outcome for their individual condition and needs.
