Wear is first in UK to offer latest canine elbow replacement system

One of the UK’s leading veterinary referral centres is the first in the country to offer an innovative canine elbow replacement system from the US.

Linnaeus-owned Wear Referrals in County Durham is now able to offer surgery using the third-generation BioMedtrix TATE elbow.

The system offers the most up-to-date instrumentation and implants designed for replacing the elbow joint in dogs to remove pain due to severe osteoarthritis of the elbow joint.

Neil Burton, head of orthopaedics at Wear Referrals, said: “It is fantastic for Wear Referrals to be in the unique position to be able to offer this surgery for the first time to dogs in the UK, and I’m delighted to be working with BioMedtrix to pilot the use of this new system.”

The third-generation system has new instrumentation to maximise the accuracy of preparation of the bone for the elbow replacement implants, as well as a new implant design for improved stability.

Wear Referrals has received approval via independent ethical review by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to be able to undertake this surgery, satisfying that experience and standards of care are appropriate to offer this advanced procedure.

Dogs with severe elbow osteoarthritis that are eligible for this surgery will be enrolled into a Phase II clinical trial of the system where their outcome will be carefully monitored postoperatively.

Wear Referrals are now seeing cases for preliminary assessment for this surgery and further details relating to the surgery, aftercare and commitments of the trial will be provided to clients at the time of their initial consultation.

Wear Referrals specialises in providing expert multidisciplinary care, including anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, out-of-hours emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
